Death of Mr. R. Mitchell

Obituary for Reuben Mitchell

The death took place yesterday morning, at his residence, Spring Bank, Sharples, or Mr. Reuben Mitchell, a local artist. His works are perhaps best known to the older generation of Boltonians, but the name is still familiar in art circles, and many homes in the town contain some of his productions. Hailing from the North, he was years ago in the habit of making excursions to Scotland and transferring to canvas picturesque scenes of that romantic country, of which he was an ardent lover. It was also his custom to hold exhibitions of his work in Bolton. He was a prolific landscape painter, and was also a capable photographer. By his death, which was due to old age, he having reached his 84th year, a link with the past is broken. Deceased was a partner in the firm, which ceased to exist 15 or 15 years ago, of Messrs. Jackson and Mitchell, Albion Foundry, Velvet Walks, and was a very clever engineer. Of late years he had not done much painting, nor taken a very active interest in business matters, though he acted as agent for one or two engineering firms and had travelled in their interested.
