    Notes
    • BIOGRAPHY: Came to America about 1880.

BIRTH: For some reason I had 1850 here. Marge's book says 1858.

      NAME: could be Herrmann
    •        In the 1905 Wisconsin State Census, Herman F. Lange is a 45 year old, white, married male. He was born in Germany of parents who were also born in Germany. He is employed as a farmer 12 months of the year. He owns his farm free and clear. Herman lives with his wife, Anna, and seven children: Hattie, Max, Selma, Anna, Wilhelmine or Minnie, Ruth, and Lydia. The family lives in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [HFL 14.]
According to a 1909 passport application,        Herman Lange arrived (New York City) aboard the SS. Deutchland from Bremen Germany on the May 09, 1885. [HFL 10.]
From the 1909 passport application, He described himself as:
      Age: 49
      Stature: 5' 8"
      Forehead: Medium
      Eyes: Blue
      Nose: Medium
      Mouth: Large
      Chin: Round
      Hair: light
      Complexion: light
      Face: Medium
Herman returned to Germany in 1909 and brought Julianna Martha Lange with him. According to Walter Hoffman, Herman and his family lived in Fairchild, Wisconsin. I have located Hermann Lange on a return trip to the United States through Ellis Island in December of 1909; he returned with (Julianna) Martha Lange, daughter of Gustav Lange on December 10, 1909 on the M.S. Neckar from Bremen, Germany. [HFL 04.] This is an assumption based on the fact that I also have Martha Lange, a single woman, on the same ship with Hermann. Yet, this is a story, told over and over by family members, so there is quite a bit of credibility to it. - DLL.
The SS Neckar was the second ship of this name owned by North German Lloyd. She was build by J. C. Tecklenborg, Geestemunde in 1900 and was a ship of 9,835 gross tons with a length of 499 feet and beam or width of 58 feet with one funnel, four masts, twin screws and a speed of 14 knots. The ship had various accommodations at different times - originally 148 in first class, 116 in second class, and 2,500 in third class. In 1905, she accommodated 369 second class 217 in third class, and 2,865 in 4th class. She crossed last in 1914, was seized in Baltimore by U. S. authorities, renamed the "Antigone" and was used by the U. S. Government until 1921. She was used by the United States Lines until 1928 and was then scrapped in Holland. [JosL 02.]
Note that the given name is spelled, Hermann. It must have been changed in the United States. On his death record, the name is spelled, Herman Lang...attested to by his brother, Robert Lang [sic]. See death record, HFL 03.
According to Walter Hoffman, Herman liked to smoke cigars, so much so that he would put a toothpick into the cigar to get a couple more puffs out of it when it burned down to be a butt.
In the 1900 U. S. Federal Census, Herman, head of household, is a 40 year old, white, married male. He is married to Anna Belter. They have been married for 17 years. He was born in December of 1859. He was born in Germany of parents who were born in Germany (probably Posen in Prussia - what is now Poland). He came to this country in 1880 and has been in the U. S. for 20 years. If I read this form correctly he has been naturalized - date unknown. Herman is a farmer; he has not been unemployed. He reads, writes, and speaks English. He owns his own farm, free and clear. He lives with his wife, Anna, and nine children (Clara, Kuno, Robert, Hattie, Selma, Annie, Max, Minnie, Ruth) in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [HFL 07.]
In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, Herman is 51 years of age, and widowed; he came to the U.S. in 1981 and has become a naturalized citizen; he is a farmer; his employment is general farming; he can read, write, and speak English although he was born in Germany and his first language is most likely German. He owns his farm free and clear. He is not blind, deaf, or dumb. He is living with three of his children: Hattie, Max, and Ledia. They all live in Cleveland Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin. [HFL 05.]
In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, Herman is 60 years old and remarried to Anna M. He owns his home, free and clear. He entered the U.S. in 1869 and was naturalized in 1886. He is able to read, write, and speak English. He was born in Germany, as were his parents, all of whom spoke German. He is currently not employed or working at a trade or profession. [HFL 06.]
An undated obituary and unknown newspaper published the following obituary:
             Herman Ferdinand Lange
"Herman Ferdinand Lange passed away suddenly at his home in Fairchild, last monday morning, July 14 [1924], at 9:30 o'clock of cerebral hemorrhage, aged 64 years, 7 months and 1 day.
The announcement of his death was a great shock to the communities of both Fairchild and Augusta where had been about in his apparently usual good health up to the time of his death. He had been up to Augusta the day before in attendance at the funeral of Mrs. John Acker and those who met him had little thought that the hand of death would so soon rest upon his brow and study frame. He had the physique of an exceptionally strong man and his mode of living: quiet, industrious and free from all excesses would suggest many more years free from the infirmities of advancing age and his sudden demise reminds us of the uncertainties of this life.
Deceased was born in Germany, on Dec. 13, 1859, where he grew to young manhood coming to America when twenty years of age, coming first to Ripon, this state, where he remained for a short time and from there coming to Augusta where he made his home until the last few years he has made his home in Fairchild.
He was married to Miss Anna Belter in Augusta, on Oct. 13, 1883, and to this union were born thirteen children, three dying in infancy, Ruth died five years ago. Mrs. Lange passed to the Great Beyond sixteen years ago, in 1908. On May 11, 1911, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mathilda Weinburger since which his time has been spent between Augusta and Fairchild though his home has been at the latter place.
He leaves to mourn his departure besides his widow, six daughter and three sons as follows: Clara Jankowsky of Fairchild, Hattie Schultz of Madison, Selma Rosenau of Fairchild, Anna Hall of Santa Cal., Minnie Mills of St. Paul, Lydia Seidel of St. Paul, Conrad of Augusta, Robert of Fairchild, and Max of Augusta. He also leaves two brothers: Robert Lange of Fairchild and Gustav in Germany, besides two stepsons, 22 grandchildren, many other relatives and a wide circle of friends.
Deceased was of a quiet and rather retiring disposition, a kind and loving husband and father, a loyal and upright citizen, just and faithful and all obligations, a kindly neighbor and true friend and those who mourn have the sympathy of all in their sorrow.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon with interment in the village cemetery.
The following were called here on account of the death of their father, Mr. H. F. Lange: Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Scholtz of Madison, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Seidel, Herman Jankowsky and Mr. and Mrs. 'Wm. Mills of St. Paul, Mrs. O. A. Hall of Santa Barbara, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Albert Seidel of Shawano;.
Mrs. Augusta Belter, Mrs. Otto Belter and Raymond and Mrs. Wm. Hendricks are here from Merrill, Wis., vising relatives and friends. They will probably remain for the funeral of Mr. H. F. Lange.
      Card of Thanks
We publicly thank all our friends and neighbors for their sympathy and kindness to us in our bereavement, Rev. Geske, Rev. Schrein, the singers, the pallbearers, those who sent floral offerings, those who furnished cars and everyone who came from far and near to pay their last respects to our beloved husband and father. Accept our sincerest thanks.
The Widow and Children of the late Mr. H. F. Lange. [HFL 01.]
