Obituary for Sarah Melissa Broadbent Paulsen Sorensen

Second wife of Lynn Sorensen


Our dear Sarah Melissa Broadbent Paulsen Sorensen peacefully passed away at age 83 on Sept. 1, 2004.

Sarah was born on September 15, 1920 in Heber City, Utah, to David A. And Mima M. Murdock Broadbent. She was the 12th of 14 children. She attended schools in Heber City and Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Utah in Elementary Education and taught in Salt Lake City.

On June 26, 1945, Sarah married her handsome Norwegian, Finn Bergstedt Paulsen in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised five children in Salt Lake City and served two missions to Brazil. Sarah served with Finn as mission president of the Brazil South mission (1961-1964) and in 1978 as the first temple president and matron of the Sao Paulo Temple. Finn passed away during this time.

Sarah's lifelong devotion to her church included serving on the Correlation Committee, the Primary General Board and as First Counselor in the General Primary Presidency from 1974 to 1977.

September 21, 1998, Sarah found a second love and married Lynn A. Sorensen. Together they served as temple president and matron of the Porto Alegre Temple (2000 to 2003). Sarah loved and appreciated Lynn, his nine children and 40 grandchildren.

Sarah was dedicated to her husband, her family, her church and her friends. Everyone who knew her felt they were her best friend, and every grandchild felt they were her favorite. Sarah has many friends in Brazil, a country and a people that she loves.

She is survived by her husband, Lynn Andrew Sorensen, her five children and their spouses: David and Deirdre Paulsen, Shauna and Michael Robbins, margie and Craig Larson, Susie and Wade harman, and Louisa Greaves. She leaves a legacy of 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at 12:00 noon, at the Little Cottonwood 5th Ward, 6350 South Rodeo Lane (1500 East). Viewings will be held Friday evening, Sept. 3, 2004, at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, from 6:30-8:30 pm, and from 10:30-11:30 am on Saturday prior to the funeral at the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, we would suggest contributions to the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 50 East North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84150-1501.
