[81] June 5, Thursday, Clayton & Newton

Breakfast with father Cocker and left for Ashworths. Stayed all forenoon, phonetic writing, singing, etc. Dinner with them and made my journey for Ashmans. Felt a little tired on the road and rested. Got at Bro. Ashman's by 4 p.m. Turned mangle [laundry?] a short time and then had tea at 5:30 p.m. Bro. John came in from his work, commenced to tell me a story about a woman saying when he was president of Newton Branch he cut her off unjustly. Now this is causing a bit of a hubbub and what will be the end of it I do not know but Bro. Ashman is for having it tried over again in the presence of Bro. Kay. According to the minutes he read to me it does not appear to me she is telling the truth. It is more than 12 months since it happened and I think it's all rubbish to resurrect such a circumstance. How it will go in I don't know, but I will watch.

Attended Clayton meeting at 8 o'clock, but it was half past before we got the meeting started. About 11 was present out of about 37. I talked a short time [82] about such things and the meeting closed. Bro. Ashman [and] Roy was with me, so we came along to home, arrived by 10 p.m. We had supper and all three wives, him & me stayed up out of bed until 1:30 a.m. talking about all kinds of things, good, bad and indifferent.

June 6, Friday, 123

Breakfast at Ashworths and walked down to the Manchester Market and met with some of our family-Father, Mother & sister Lusy. They give me a little money. Mother would have me to get a little more breakfast with them in a cook shop. Parted with them. Met Bro. Kay about 12 noon. Got out all Star parcels, come back, had a few roasted potatoes with him about 4:30 p.m. I had intended going home, but it rained heavy so [I] stayed with him in the room. We had a very healthy conversation, reading me his journal, etc. Slept together.

June 7th, Saturday, home

Had a good night rest. Breakfast together. I went with him to Knott Mill Station, where he book[ed] for
