[1] James Lythgoe was born on the 15th day of March 1842. In the township of Pendlebury-Parish of Eccles, near Manchester. And was first baptized by Elder George
Rushton on the first day of May 1852. And confirmed by Elder Samuel Hamer. And ordained to the office of a Teacher under the hands of Elder Edward Oliver May 10th 1857.
Also ordained to fulfill the office of a priest Sep. 22nd 1859. Under the hands of Elder Thomas Pitts. And Ordained to the office of Elder under the hands of Prest. Pitts Nov. 11th 1860.
And appointed to travel in the Manchester Conference under the direction of Presidents John M. Kay and William H. Dame March 26th 1862. The following is a copy of my appointment.

This certifies that you are appointed to labour in the Manchester Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, under the direction of Elder William H. Dame.
It is your duty to preach the Gospel and administer the ordinances therof which pertain to the office of an Elder, and assist your President in discharging any duties which he may require of you, for the welfare of the cause where you are appointed to labour.
