Obituary for H. Grant Weech

Hyrum Grant Weech, age 92, passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City on March 14. He was born Jan. 3, 1919, in Mount Pleasant, Utah, to Estella Jensen Weech and Robert Walter Weech. He married Evelyn Holmgren on Nov. 19, 1941. He held her hand and heart until she left this life on March 8, 2002, after more than 60 years together. Grant was sealed to Evelyn in the Salt Lake Temple on March 8, 2006.

Grant was active in the Cottonwood 4th Ward. Many of his fellow Ward members gave kind and loving service to Grant and Evelyn in their later years.

Grant graduated from South High School in 1935 and entered the job market as an apprentice in the fur fashion field. He studied design, pattern-making and manufacturing in N.Y. City and proudly practiced the art for the next 46 years. He worked as a furrier in Phoenix and San Diego before spending many years at Arendt’s Furs in Salt Lake City.

Grant entered the military in March, 1941, and served as a medic for his unit until October, 1945. While in Europe with a field artillery unit, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement while engaged with the enemy. His other awards include the European Theater Medal with the Silver Service Star, denoting five major campaigns.

Grant is survived by his son, Steven (Janet) of South Jordan; four grandsons: Shane (Nicole), Travis (Raschel), Troy, and Derek (Becky); and seven beautiful great-grandchildren. Many brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces have been a joy in his life, especially a very caring niece, Colleen Costello. Preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Merrill J. (Helen) and Roy, and his sister, Janet (Lynn Sorensen).

In lieu of flowers, Grant requested donations to the Am. Parkinson’s Disease Assoc. (www.UtahAPDA.org).

Family and friends may pay their respects at a visitation, Fri. March 18, 11:00 a.m., and a Memorial Service at noon, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, 3401 Highland Dr. Interment will follow in the Northmont Section.
