    Notes:

Wilson K. Lythgoe ("Billy") says that his father Thomas left home at an early age, right after his mother died, to "ride with the cowboys." He worked as a cowboy, on the stagecoach, and even had his own freighting business, freighting from Bridger, MT to Wyoming. He never did get over the death of his first wife, Mary.

According to Wilson, Thomas had a strained relationship with his family. He was only close to his "kid" sister, who lived in Ogden.

A step-grandson of Thomas says, "Grandpa Lythgoe (Tom) was a wonderful grandpa to me when as a little boy he let me 'help' him and Uncle Bill (Wilson King Lythgoe) put up hay every summer. Between Grandpa and Uncle Bill I was paid five cents a load which was a fortune during those depression years.

"I remember him singing folk songs that had a line about 'he combed his hair with a wagon wheel'. I remember him reading at night by the kerosene lamp. I remember that he was the hardest worker who always had a happy spirit, especially in a job well done.

"His greatest joy was his beautiful matched teams of horses. Your picture of him holding his team beside his log cabin tells volumes about his pride in fine horses.

"I never thought of him as a "step-grandfather" but as the best grampa a little boy could have hoped for."

    Baptized in Santaquin, Utah, UT.

Mary (daughter of George Harston and Catherine Harrop) was born on 21 Dec 1872 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah; died on 7 Jan 1908 in Cowley, Big Horn, Wyoming; was buried on 18 Jan 1908 in Cowley, Big Horn, Wyoming. Notes:

NAME: Writing by daughter Lavinia gives his middle name as 'Hezekia', without the 'h'.

BIOGRAPHY: Dennis Lythgoe tells the following as related to him by his mother, Lavinia, Alfred's daughter:
Alfred was a strange man--quiet, a tightwad, and sometimes a wife beater. Leo (Lavinia's husband) despised him.
Since he was a hairdresser, Lavinia took the children to him for free haircuts, but he seldom said much during the visits ("Open your eyes!" was about all, says Dennis). He owned a string of salons, but later lost them all due to poor management.
He didn't want to spend any of his money on his family, and even refused to buy Lavinia glasses when she needed them. She went for three or four years without them. Dennis attributes some of Lavinia's idiosyncratic behaviors to he upbringing.
Once Alfred came home and found that dinner was not ready. As a punishment for his wife, he told all the children to get their coats on. He was going to take them all to a restaurant--but not Beatrice, his wife. Lavinia was so angry that she refused to go, though all the others went.
Another time Alfred was so angry with Beatrice that he started choking her and might have killed her had not one of his sons pulled him off in time.
Uncle Tom contributes the following: At 14 he ran away from home and didn't come back for six years. His parents had put him on a farm, and he didn't like that. His father may have been mean to him. While away he worked in mines and learned to be a barber. He was found in Oregon by some missionaries who told him "Your mother misses you." He went back to Logan, where he met Beatrice Carlisle. He told her, "If you don't marry me, I'll kill myself."
His parents cut him out of their will. According to daughter Ruth Mitchell Challis, this was due to an incident that happened while Alfred was boxing. Apparently he was a boxer at one time, and once his opponent died in the ring. Ruth says this is why his father disowned him.

Alfred married Beatrice Carlisle on 19 Nov 1902 in Logan Temple, Logan, Cache, Utah. Beatrice (daughter of John George Carlisle and Margaret Adeline Kewley) was born on 13 Apr 1882 in Logan, Cache, Utah; died on 15 Jul 1963 in Bountiful, Davis, Utah; was buried on 18 Jul 1963 in Sunset Lawn, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. He also learned to play the violin in England, walking seven miles each week for his music lesson. He taught music lessons and could play and teach almost any instruments. After arriving in Utah, he homesteaded a farm but his music was never forgotten. He played his violin for many entertainments and dances and became chorister for the first choir organized in Henefer. He and his wife, Hannah, operated a little confectionery and store for many years in Henefer.

From a letter written by his son, John E. Carlisle: "He went to American when a young man between 20 and 30 yrs of age."

From Alma Carlisle: "Some years ago I was talking to Ben Carlisle when he was in Provo. We were discussing the Martin Handcart company and Margaret Kewley. He said it has always been a tradition on his side of the family that John Carlisle was one of the rescuers sent by Brigham Young in 1856. As I remember it, he said that John Carlisle brought Margaret back to Salt Lake on his horse. However, you have indicated that another version of this story is that he brought her back in a wagon. Since he had driven a wagon across the trail for Godbe and he knew something of both wagons, teams as well as the Oregon/Mormon Trails it would be more plausible that he had a wagon rather than just a horse.

Assuming this story is correct, and it probably is since different
branches of the family have heard it and Ben said that his family heard it from Margaret Kewley herself, the next issue concerns where he might have first seen her. I don't imagine that he could have first made contact with her anytime before the company left Martin's Cove. There's a possibility he could have reached the company somewhere along thetrail between Martin's Cove and South Pass, but he may not have reached the handcart group prior to their arriving at Fort Bridger. My guess, although it's pure speculation, is that he met the company somewhere around South Pass. As I remember, there is one account which indicated that by the time the Martin Handcart Company arrived at South Pass there was enough transportation for everybody to be able to ride and nobody had to walk after that. I hope this helps."

John married Margaret Adeline Kewley on 18 Apr 1857 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Margaret (daughter of James Kewley and Ann Karran) was born on 5 Mar 1840 in Peel, Kirk German, Isle of Man, England; was christened on 6 Mar 1840 in Peel, Kirk German, Isle of Man, England; died on 11 Mar 1923 in Logan, Cache, Utah; was buried on 13 Mar 1923 in Logan City Cemetery, Logan, Cache, Utah.
